I think its wrong for teachers to teach from a specific viewpoint period, whether that viewpoint be socialist, right wing or bible belt.

HomeSchoolers Rule!

Why, thank you, Jeremy:)

GR, no matter the subject one's world view always comes through from the choice of textbook, extra required reading, classroom discussions, sharing of applicable personal life experiences, etc. I don't think that one charged with educating should specifically seek to sway very influential minds to one's personal political views, but I don't know how it could be possible to not do so. That is one of a plethora of reasons that we chose to home educate. Please, I will not defend our decision to home educate against those who are obviously decided against it. But, I will throw this tidbit out to gnaw on for those who aren't decided one way or the other: we choose to expose our children at age appropriate times to dissenting views from the ones that we have taught them. It may come up in conversations or I may purpose to open the dialogue up and purposely moderate it a specific direction. (I prefer the Socratic method). So don't automatically pigeon-hole us as reclusive anti-social extremists (just read through the archives and you'll see for yourself). We simply believe that gentle inoculation allows a person to be "shrewd as vipers and gentle as lambs."

Hey, i totally respect you for homeschooling your kids, i think its a brave undertaking indeed...and it shows you are obviously really dedicated to your kids. I wasnt knocking home schooling in any way whatsoever. But i feel, that my time in education....primary, high school then college (and hopefully university soon...) i learnt a great deal my parents couldnt teach me. I created my own views on the world around me, and they are very different to my parents. Im a strong believer in kids gradually making up their own ideals, values and beliefs on the world....which is why i think its wrong when teachers/parents doctrinate their kids to a certain way of thinking, as the woman in the article was doing (in that case radical left wing thinking.) Its your decision to home school, and i really hope you arnt biased against people that choose to send their kids to a public school.

Not at all, GR- remember, I said that we aren't "reclusive anti-social extremists."
