Today in the checkout line, the cashier, obviously Hispanic, told me that my Spanish was spoken with an Italian or maybe even a Portuguese accent. He then asked if I was Italian or Brazilian. I asked if I looked Italian or Brazilian and he and the co-worker with whom he was conversing replied with a solid, "Yes!"
Hmmm, I don't think so, but am not sure if I am complimented or not. It was meant in a complimentary way, but I am proud to be an American woman. I do have an admitted fascination with Europe, and am a confessed Anglophile, but Italian? Brazilian? I don't think so.
Posted by Rae at November 6, 2005 05:33 PMHey, on the bright side, they didn't say you spoke it with an American accent. That's progress!
My Spanish teacher in high school, fluent in the language, could never quite get her Southern accent out of it. I got lucky, I guess, with a Connecticut father and a South Carolina mother, that my accent has always been naturally neutral, and allows me to slip into other accents with ease (often without even knowing it).
Posted by: andy at November 6, 2005 05:56 PMYou can’t look at those Brazilian beauty queens and not take this a compliment.
Posted by: bigwhitehat at November 6, 2005 06:11 PMAndy, the odd thing is that I have always been complimented on my ability to speak Spanish with a Spanish accent, as in people from Mexico and Argentina can note the difference, but they have still praised it as being almost indiscernible, so I thought it was weird.
BWT- I haven't seen any Brazilian Beauty Queens. Are they attractive?
Posted by: Rae at November 6, 2005 08:13 PMI'd bet my lunch money that he was flirting with you.
And you're just too modest to notice.
LOL!! Soo cute.
Posted by: Margi at November 7, 2005 09:15 AMNaaa. He wasn't flirting with me. Really. It was completely conversational. But, you do give me a nice little egotistical beauty boost in thinking it to be :D
Posted by: Rae at November 7, 2005 10:39 AMLike you need a beauty boost of any kind....
Posted by: Darren at November 7, 2005 01:55 PMDarren, I don't know a woman alive who wouldn't enjoy a bit of a beauty boost on occasion :D
Right ladies?
From my investigation of Brazilian women, I guess that it was a compliment, in a round-about sort of way. He was really dissecting my accent...
Posted by: Rae at November 7, 2005 02:09 PMBuenos Dias, y'all! ;) I've been practicing my Spanish (learning from a CD) but still get more compliments on my Ukranian of all things! I don't speak much Ukranian, but with any language I try hard to accomplish the little things that make it genuine. I don't think my Spanish is great but so far I haven't accidently asked for a Jalepeno in my glass of milk so I must be ok...
Posted by: Mark La Roi at November 8, 2005 01:12 PMBut you have an Italian brother (who lives in AZ) and you are disowning the Italian...hmmm. Can you see my pained espression? :-)
Posted by: km at November 8, 2005 08:53 PMRae: Italian or Brazilian? That's definitely a compliment. Think Monica Bellucci (Italian) or Gisele Bündchen or Xuxa (Brazilian; you can google for those names if you don't know them). My, that's definitely a compliment... and anyone able to discern at least a hint of beauty in this world would second it ;).
Blessings,
Eduardo
