Vice Commander-in-Chief

One of the things I have appreciated and respected about Dick Cheney is that he is actually fulfilling the role of a VP. He didn't just fill a PR/traditional role that it seems most have been relegated to in the past.

He advises and counsels but doesn't seek to upstage. I think him knowledgeable, capable, principled, forthright, and perfect as W.'s running mate.

In fairness to the vice president's underwhelming predecessors, there are few specifid duties of the office. The Constitution expects the vice president to preside over the Senate--which hasn't been the practice since World War II--and that's about it. John Adams was invited to some early meetings of Washington's cabinet, but for most of American history, the VP was not even considered a cabinet advisor. The "modern" vice presidency can be traced back to Walter Mondale, who played an active role in policy and legislative strategy for Carter. He was also, I believe, the first VP to have an office in the West Wing (previous VPs only maintained an office in the Capitol, where Cheney still has a ceremonial office.)
